At the tender age of 3, with a family (mother Ute Busse and older sister Tina Irwin) fully immersed into the sport, Sarah’s curiosity and love for horses was immediate. She was given the opportunity to ride and compete at her first show at the age of 7.</p>
<p>Throughout her pre-teen and teen years, Sarah had a successful partnership with a grey mare, Nishka, who achieved many regional and national championships. The mare was retired and Sarah moved on to working with a Hanoverian Gelding, La Valse, which became her Young Riders Mount. Sarah and La Valse also had many successes, capturing regional and national championships at First and Second level. In 1999, Sarah and La Valse became a part of the Young Riders Dressage Team, competing in Chicago, IL at Temple Farms. The team achieve 5th place overall.</p>
<p>The start of a new prospect began in March 2002, with the purchase of “Maximus”. Sarah and Ute saw such potential in this unique Belgium/Hackney cross. A short 2 months later, Sarah and Maximus were competing successfully at First and Second level, achieving 67% at the first show. Maximus continued his achievements becoming Regional Champion and Reserve Champion that year. As they continued to climb the levels, only 2 years later they were competing at 4th level with numerous 2nd and 3rd place finishes. In summer 2004, Sarah and Maximus had 5 consecutive wins and became 4th level Champions.</p>
<p>In 2005, they jumped to Prix. St. George, in the first year capturing scores as high as 67%. They continued in this level for a few years, in 2007 receiving a high score of 70.25% in the PSG. Sarah and Maximus were also long listed in this year. In 2008, they began competing at the Intermediare I, placing 4th in the freestyle. They finished 2008 with winning the Intermediare I Freestyle, and claiming title of Ontario Freestyle Champion and Ontario Reserved Advanced Champions. 2009 was another solid year of competition, creating more experience in the advanced ring. In 2010, Sarah and Maximus competed at the Intermediare II level, scoring in the mid 60’s their first season, with a first place and second place finish. With the continued support of her parents (mother/coach Ute Busse and father/photographer Dieter Busse) and husband Jarrett, the hard work Sarah and Maximus put forth is laying the foundation of an upcoming success at the Grand Prix level. Maximus’ strengths are the passage and piaffe movements, with a powerful presence; they will become a fierce contender at the Grand Prix level in 2011. Maximus is a type of horse that is sensitive, but sensible, has a kind and gentle nature who is always looking to please his rider.</p>
<p>Outside of Sarah’s extreme dedication to her riding, she is also a successful Interior Designer and Teacher. Having a previous 5 years of experience in the design industry, Sarah’s company Head Turner Designs began in 2008, as an opportunity to run a business with flex hours to accommodate her riding. Her company has grown immensely, but she somehow finds time to be at the barn 6 times per week to ride and train. In 2010, Sarah also accepted a teaching position at Conestoga College, teaching the Interior Decorating Program. Her passion for design, dressage and sharing the knowledge of the industry has created a very rewarding yet busy schedule.</p>
<p>When she is not riding or working, Sarah enjoys spending time with her husband Jarrett snowboarding and dirt biking or just relaxing with friends and family and her treasured aussie dog, Kylie.</p>
